The Netherlands has a temperate maritime climate. The winters are usually mild, but when a chill easterly wind is blowing, the temperature drops below zero, and the canals and lakes freeze over. The Dutch can’t wait to put on their skates and take part in the many races and  tours that are held on the ice.
